A Busy Weekend….

Someone asked Nicky what was happening this weekend just gone. Let’s see if I missed anything out!

What a hectic weekend it was for the Tigers!

The final scheduled Local League Div 2 polo matches were played at the Dolphin Centre, with Tigers Youth and ‘C’ teams playing (with a few ringers!).

Matt Fletcher and Nicky Cresser attended the GB Canoe Polo training weekend in London with good performances by both. Nicky is now the Senior Men’s B Team Captain and Matt is on the U21 team.

The slalom Div 3/4 race at Oughtibridge(Sheffield) was attended by Andy, Jake and Ellie Brown, Trev and Jonathan Keay, The Wilkos and Chaz Chung. Chaz got promoted to Div 3, Ellie got all the gates, Trev refrained from his usual Saturday swim and Jake beat his Dad!

Tonksie, Darren and Mark Ledger represented the Tigers at the Tryweryn Prem/Div 1 slalom on Saturday and Sunday. Mark did well but not Daz and James’ best results(4 x 50’s between them!) but James was still pleased with the overall outcome (and the sun tan)! A number of ‘honorary’ Tigers also gave the ‘Ski Slope’ a go and offered their support.

Darren Cresser had a very busy weekend as he also tried his hand at a bit of river racing on the lower sections of the Tryweryn with dyer consequences for his new (baby blue) boat but an alright result for him! The stickers on his boat need changing from “Kick the Waves” to “Smash the Rocks!”. He was 7th out of 18 in the Classic event and 4th in the Sprint. At the end of his second sprint run Daz said “that must be faster” and it was by an impressive and awe inspiring 0.2 seconds! And this has only gone and landed him a place in the GB River Racing Team. Well done Darren.

And well done all the Tigers on their performances this weekend.

It just goes to show that if you ask a Tiger what’s happening at the weekend you better have a good 5 minutes to listen to the answer!

On Saturday, We Gathered To Remember Sim

neillwatson_1039617After the terrible events of this past week, we felt it was appropriate to meet up on Saturday at The Watersports Centre on the River Tees to take a paddle up river. It was a lovely spring day with the sun shining and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came along to remember Sim.

We were overwhelmed by the response as over 100 people arrived, some traveling considerable distance to be with us and we had just under 100 actually paddling on the water with us. It was a great comfort to us all to know that Sim had so many friends who are thinking of his family at this time.

There are some photographs taken on the day, free for people to download for their personal & blog use, simply click this link and enter the password ‘tigers’ when prompted.

Once again, our heartfelt thanks for all of your support for Simon’s family, it really is appreciated.

Matt’s GB Polo Weekend

Tigers member Matt spent the weekend with the GB Canoe Polo team recently, here are his thoughts after returning home:

After making it through the selection process earlier in the year I was given the opportunity to join the under 21’s squad, I took up the offer straight away with great anticipation.

On the 21st of March I attended my first GB weekend. After a long drive down I arrived at Danson Park to begin my weekend of training. To start with we were introduced to the rest of the squad many of which I already knew from previous polo competitions, followed by an introduction to our new coach George Spittal. Read more

Our Re-Launched Website

We’ve finally got around to launching the new website payout. Many thanks to Matt and Sim for the suggestions regarding which theme to use, for the kind of colour scheme we were looking for - the mods took a while longer, as always, but hopefully it will prove popular.
There’s be lots of news from this Easter Weekend with events at Grand Tully and also the pool Polo match at The Dolphin Centre in Darlington. So if you’re at either event, get your cameras out, make some notes and help the website to grow and grow!

Tees Tigers’ Nicky Makes the England Team

Nicky Cresser’s not one for screaming from the rooftops, but we managed to squeeze this out of him when we found out he’d make the England team!

  • “I’m on the England team in C1 and have raced at Grandtully in the Pan-Celtic cup. I finished 8th, right up there with the prem guys which isn’t bad for a bit of a novice, guess. I managed a strong performance at the first selection weekend, dominating the fitness tests and having good presence on the pitch during the games sessions, I was named in the line up for the men’s senior A-team for the first major international of the season in Charleroi (Belgium). The team gelled after an uncertain start with a few significant changes in personel, and finished in 4th place in a very strong field. With this strong performance behind me I have been named in the line-up for Essen in Germany, after which the lineup will be finalised for the European Championships in August.”

The Cubs Play For The First Time

Sunday 30th November and coach Katie Sweeting takes the Tees Tiger youth team for their
first ever match….. Although they all compete in canoe slalom, they’d never played as a team
before and any practise was down to a few sessions at the training venue at Stockton….

    Tees Tigers Junior Team

“Just wanted to say a big well done to the kids who competed today in Pontefract, with only a
4-0 loss to an experienced Kingston side followed by a 2-2 draw agianst FOA and narrowly
losing 3-2 to green star after a disallowed goal, then to go on and once again draw 2-2 with an
older scratch team is more than impressive for a first ever competition for you guys.”
And many thanks to the organisers who ran such a tight schedule, even managing to fit in some
extra mixed team matches at the end for fun. The next match is again at Pontefract at the end
of January, now they’ve got a taste for it, they promise to learn more of the rules for next time!
