Beginners Winter Pool Training

Over the winter the club has ran two blocks of six evening sessions for the beginners to canoeing.  The sessions ran in the swimming pool at the Education Village in Darlington so it was a great chance to learn the strokes and practice some rescue techniques in the warmth!  A few of the more experienced paddlers also took the opportunity to practice their rolling skills.  It was a great opportunity for some of the younger paddlers (and not so young!) to increase their confidence in the relative comfort of the pool before this season’s races start.  We even got our youngest paddler giving it a go – Ella, aged 2 (pictured with her Dad Brian).ellas-paddle

Super Slalom Sunday - 3rd January 2011

The first Sunday of the new year saw the hardiest of the Tees Tigers and a few fellow mad men from across the country take to the waters at Abbey Rapids for the second annual Super Slalom Sunday open race.  Everyone put in some good practice before the timed runs despite the bitter cold (including huge lumps of ice left over from the recent freeze!).  Thanks to Darren for running the event.  Read on to see the results. Middleton-in-Teesdale Div 3/4 Slalom – 2nd and 3rd October 2010

Well it was another extreme weather race weekend for the Tigers!

On the 2nd and 3rd October Middleton-in-Teesdale was resurrected as a slalom venue after many years off the calendar.

A cold but dry Saturday morning dawned with some doubts as to whether the event would go ahead after the river Tees had risen rapidly on Friday after non-stop rain, resulting in some lost gates.  To quote Andy Rhu, it rose by “one meter in five seconds”!  I think you had to see it to believe it! 2nd Place for the Tigers!!!

And more importantly we made Stafford and Stone worry!

All Tigers Trophies

All Tigers Trophies

The National Inter-Clubs are an annual event where the top 20-25 clubs from across the country are represented by their top paddler in each division and category.  It is a big event in the slalom calendar - the only where all divisions are paddling at the same event plus the only where you are paddling solely for your club - so club rivalry is intense!  The competition has been dominated for the last 25 years by Stafford and Stone, undefeated in the last 7 years.  Last year was the first appearance for Tees Tigers, with a solid mid table performance. The Almighty trip to Belgium then Germany then back to Belgium!

Well we woke up at 6 aiming to set off for 7, but this did not happen unfortunately. So this meant we were an hour behind already!!!! But no worries, when we arrived at Nottingham, sure enough, we had to wait for Ads and Stuart who were late, not the top brown nosers of the day. We set off for the ferry, was a tight squeeze but it was no problem for the family magnet, it managed to fit 5 sets of kit, 5 sets of people’s luggage and two tents with sleeping bags! The struggle was the six boats and eight kayak paddles, seven of which were shoved in-between two boats free to move around a bit. The eighth was tied on the very edge of a boat. Read more
